Calahonda Information

Calahonda on the Costa del Sol

Founded in the early 1960´s Calahonda is the amalgamation of two large tracts of land that were owned by wealthy Spanish Families. It is now a busy and thriving community with year round residents enjoying their Calahonda properties.

From the vibrant hills around Calahonda, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the coastline, Gibraltar and on a clear day even the resplendent African coastline is visible.

Recreational activities are excellent and there is something to suit all ages.

The area boasts a large stretch of sandy beach, perfect for beach loving families, while the popular Miraflores golf and tennis club and La Siesta Golf Course attract keen golfers and offer ample opportunity to get the golf kit and tennis raquets out. The large Club del Sol sports centre located above the centre of Calahonda offers tennis, paddle and squash courts and a gym. Top hotels offering spa breaks and treatments in this area simply add to the general attraction and pull the area has.

Calahonda is literally 2 minutes from Puerto de Cabopino which is a beautiful small harbour, popular for great restaurants and a lovely sandy beach. Keen sailors can also hire boats and Cabopino is a popular destination for people from the UK and Northern Europe to fly over and spend a few days in the sun doing boat tuition with instructors who are fully English speaking RYA course trainers.

Location of the Calahonda on the Costa del Sol

Calahonda is located almost centrally between Marbella and Fuengirola.

Distance from Airports

Calahonda is located conveniently close to Malaga Airport, approximately 30 km away.

Gibraltar Airport is approximately an hour away.

Alicante airport (view website) and Murcia airport (view website) are located on the Costa Blanca so are over 4 hours away so are not realistic options for the Costa del Sol.

One of the most appealing features of Calahonda is that it is located nearly smack in the centre of the magnificent Costa del Sol making all of the great activities that the coast offers easily accessible to its residents.

Indeed, Calahonda is a perfect base for a person interested in making day trips around the Costa del Sol. The Sierra Nevada is around 1.5 hours drive from the coast and there are popular ski resorts located up in the mountains with a ski season running from around November to March, give or take a few weeks etiher side to cater for the climate of the time. You could spend a weekend sunbathing on the beach to then go up to the mountains for skiing, where else in Europe can you do that! The motorways are well maintained in Spain and the roads up to the Sierra Nevada are gritted during the winter months to ensure the constant flow of tourists can get in and out of the ski resorts.

If you are thinking of hiring a car to tarvel around the the best deals are always the Malaga Airport car hire companies as they have so much competition they have to keep their rate very keen.

One such recommended trip is up to the El Chorro lakes in the town of Antequera. Spanning a vast amount of space, there are 3 massive lakes that were man-made and these days serve as a perfectly idyllic location to enjoy a day trip out. With water sports down on the lakes possible throughout the summer months and a number of waterside restaurants dotted around the lakes edges, the lakes are known as the Lake District of Spain.

Additional location information for Calahonda

Calahonda is a healthy size community and is a popular location for those holiday makers looking to combine a good range of family orientated services and facilities with a substantial offering for night time entertainment and dining opportunities.

With lots to do along with luscious greenery in the hills above Calahonda, it is also no wonder that it is high on the list of locations for weddings in Spain and many seek to have the Calahonda hills as the idyllic romantic backdrop to their contemporary wedding photography.

From a work perspective although there is a choice of employment opportunities in Calahonda some people actually drive down to Gibraltar and work in Gibraltar instead.
